Lab Description

The Safa Lab ( at USF’s Department of Medical Engineering investigates the biomechanics and mechanobiology of soft tissues with a particular emphasis on the eye. Our research focuses on the role of biomechanical forces in glaucoma and other fibrotic diseases. We integrate ex vivo tissue testing, computational modeling, and in vivo imaging to understand tissue-level processes that contribute to disease progression. Ongoing projects include iris biomechanics in primary angle-closure glaucoma, optic nerve head mechanobiology, and device development for in vivo biomechanical assessment. We are a collaborative and translational research group, embedded within an interdisciplinary biomedical engineering ecosystem at USF.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Doctoral Student at the University of South Florida located in Tampa, FL. The Doctoral Student will be responsible for conducting research, writing dissertations, attending seminars, and collaborating with faculty and peers. Additionally, the Doctoral Student will participate in teaching assistantships, academic conferences, and scholarly activities.

Qualifications

• A strong background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, biophysics, or a related discipline
• Demonstrated interest or experience in biomechanics, mechanobiology, or ophthalmic research
• Experience with imaging techniques (e.g., OCT, microscopy), finite element modeling, or tissue testing is highly desirable.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills
• Excellent scientific writing and communication abilities
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Master’s degree preferred but not required (qualified applicants with a bachelor’s degree and research experience will be considered)
