JOB SUMMARY:

The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Transportation Division within a designated district area. This role partners closely with local Operational Management, the Marketing Team, and the Director of Transportation & Logistics to optimize staff, equipment, and processes — ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused transportation services.

JOB DUTIES:

• Manage daily transportation operations (primarily via truck) for a single district area, ensuring timely, cost-effective service and a positive customer experience.
• Oversee staffing levels to meet service demands and maintain high customer satisfaction.
• Regularly review and manage cost structures for internal truck drivers and Contract Carrier Agreements within the district.
• Maintain an up-to-date inventory of transportation equipment in the district, identifying opportunities to optimize asset utilization.
• Track and manage fuel costs and surcharges, working with corporate teams to adjust as necessary.
• Collaborate with local operations, marketing, and purchasing teams to recommend and support leasing or purchasing transportation equipment.
• Monitor maintenance and repair costs (MRO), identifying and addressing cost drivers.
• Support performance management of internal drivers and Contract Carriers in the district, building and maintaining strong relationships with service providers.
• Assist with resolving service issues or inefficiencies involving Contract Carriers.
• Partner with the corporate Safety Team to promote and enforce transportation safety standards within the district.
• Utilize the Scrap Runner program for dispatch and transportation analysis, supporting local initiatives for continuous improvement.
• Assist Marketing and local leadership in analyzing transportation and equipment costs for accounts with non-standard service needs.
• Develop, track, and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support district business objectives and operational goals.
• Collaborate with the local Marketing Team to capitalize on excess truck capacity and create new revenue opportunities.
• Provide transportation reports and operational updates to management as requested.

PROJECT FUNCTIONS:

• Assist in updating and enhancing Contract Carrier Agreements, addressing:
• Auto-renewal language to maintain current contracts.
• Fuel surcharge program structure for consistency.
• Damage claim policies and payment holdback processes.
• Service expectations for standard and occasional services.
• Develop simple pro forma tools to help Contract Carriers understand equipment requirements and optimize service delivery.
