LOCATION: NRA Headquarters (Fairfax VA) - onsite
SUMMARY: Manage, oversee and develop public communications to forward the goals and objectives of NRA. Responsibilities include developing a comprehensive communications strategy for NRA, NRA programs and key legislation in conjunction with NRA-ILA. Develop effective long- and short-term messaging for NRA, then deliver it through appropriate internal and external communications channels. Work with internal and external resources to tell NRA's side of the story, positions and accomplishments. Develop relationships to create earned media to advance NRA's mission. Manage Public Affairs message, budget and personnel. Strong knowledge of and support for the mission of the National Rifle Association.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Directs the development and execution of the communications strategy to meet the goals and objectives of the National Rifle Association.
2. Provides guidance to and creates messaging for NRA executive staff on issues, events and legislative priorities, in conjunction with NRA-ILA and appropriate internal and external resources.
3. Responsible for creating and executing, as required, NRA's Public Affairs crisis management plan.
4. Determines the most appropriate answers to media inquiries, in an accurate and timely manner.
5. Drafts and/or edits news releases, talking points, background information and other written strategic materials.
6. Evaluates and determines best NRA staff and other assets to communicate NRA's message online, broadcast or other media platforms. Provides and/or assists in media training for executives to prepare them for media engagements.
7. Acts as an NRA spokesperson in external communication as appropriate.
8. Works with internal staff and outside vendors and agencies in proactive placement of NRA messaging in media outlets.
9. Oversees and monitors Press Offices at major NRA events, i.e., NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, Great American Outdoor Show.
10. Collaborates and liaisons with all departments within the NRA to help each department identify and meet its public affairs needs.
11. Oversee the development and delivery of high quality and strategic content aimed at increasing awareness of NRA programs through various mediums.
12. Responsible for the development of an ongoing media outreach strategy to ensure NRA objectives are being met via online, print, TV, , social media, press relationships, etc.
13. Oversees monitoring of nationwide print and broadcast to the best of ability. Disseminates articles of interest to stakeholders when appropriate.
14. Participates in the strategy and delivery of NRA program messages to NRA members, volunteers, supporters and affiliates within divisional guidelines.
15. Develop, implement and monitor annual divisional budget, within divisional guidelines.
16. Perform other tasks as assigned.
SCOPE: High visibility within NRA Public Affairs and NRA Media staff, other NRA Divisions--in particular NRA-ILA and NRA General Operations--local and national press and media outlets, external public affairs and communications vendors, the general public, and NRA members. Position functions in a fast-paced work environment with minimal direct supervision. Local and national travel required. Frequent after hours and weekend work required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Undergraduate degree in marketing, journalism or communications field required. At least 10 years of experience in the fields of Public Affairs, journalism or communications is required. At least 6-7 years of experience in press/media relations required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Knowledge of NRA and its mission required. Demonstrated proficiency in public speaking, press/media interaction, and leadership required. Strong administrative and effective written/verbal communications skills required. Proven management skills together with the ability to prioritize work and oversee projects required. The ability to develop and implement communications programs from inception required. Crisis management skills critical. Attention to detail is critical, as well as being self-motivated essential. Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and social media critical. Demonstrated ability to formulate, implement and monitor annual budget required. Proven ability to supervise and motivate staff critical. Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff and NRA members essential. Ability to perform independently or as a member of a team required.
