Job Description

Established, renowned law firm, headquartered in Birmingham, is searching for an experienced HR Director. The HR Director will be responsible for managing the human resources operations of the firm and will report to the firm’s management committee, as well as meet with the management committee on a regular basis.

Personnel and Human Resources Management

The HR Director will be responsible for overall non-attorney personnel management, including the following:

  • Managing / coordinating the human resources functions for the firm, including coordinating all aspects of the interview process for non-exempt (hourly) staff including but not limited to the following: screening resumes, interviews, reference and background checks (including drug examinations), final in-office meetings to coordinate hiring decisions (including all communications with the hiring team), and overseeing/coordinating the orientation and onboarding of new employees.

  • Assist in recruitment of associate attorneys, including: post job ads, hire recruiters (as needed), and develop key relationships in Birmingham to develop a network that promotes and supports the desire to work for Cory Watson.

  • Determining non-attorney staff needs, posting ads and the interview process in coordination with the supervising attorneys, management committee and practice group leaders.

  • Supervising and coordinating introductory and additional as-needed training of non-attorney personnel with the firm’s software administrator.

  • Coordination of paid time off (PTO) of non-attorney personnel and communication with the appropriate supervisor(s), ensuring the employee has the PTO available to support the request.

  • Counseling non-attorney personnel who are not complying with firm procedures and requirements and taking disciplinary action when necessary.

  • Handling termination of employment of non-attorney employees after consultation with the supervising attorney(s) and the management committee.

  • Conducting non-attorney personnel meetings.

  • Conducting non-attorney personnel 90-day reviews and yearly reviews, with supervising attorney(s).

  • Maintaining personnel records for all employees.

  • Recommending salary adjustments for non-attorney personnel, for management approval.

  • Maintaining the employee handbook, labor laws, and policies including ADA, FLMA, Unemployment claims and WC claims.

  • Administering, evaluating, recommending and implementing changes, as appropriate, to the benefits offered by the Firm, including retirement benefits.

  • Liaison between Benefits and Employees (attorneys and non-attorneys).

  • Conduct annual audits including: WC, ESR, EEO-1, 401(k) audit, 401(k) and Health 5500 filings and ensure compliance.

  • Quarterly trips to Memphis branch office and weekly visits to intake office for training, review, management.

Responsibilities Related to the Management of Firm Finances

  • Management of timekeeping system and oversight of timekeeping for all non-exempt employees; finalizing timekeeping and submitting payroll reports to the controller for processing on a bi-weekly basis.
  • All benefits for employees, including calculating benefit deductions for payroll.

  • Managing 401(k) reporting and overseeing the bi-weekly payroll files in Fidelity to send to Controller.

  • Conducting all new employee and annual open enrollment.

  • Auditing and approving monthly expense reports.

  • Oversee annual business insurance renewals and contracts.

General Day-to-Day Operations

Performing / coordinating all other operational functions required of a growth-oriented law firm.

Other Activities

Assist the firm’s attorneys in recruiting attorneys, training associates and improving the total quality of the practice of law for the firm’s attorneys. This includes coordinating the initial and ongoing training for all of the firm’s legal staff to ensure they are equipped to fulfill their job cuties efficiently and effectively.

Responsible for coordinating quarterly firm social functions, with approval from management.

Coordinating Clerkship program with attorneys, including recruitment, interview process, decisions and maintaining schedules.
