Job Description
Job Purpose: The Environmental Health and Safety Director is responsible for the day-to-day development, implementation and evaluation of the organization's occupational health and safety programs. Responsible for the security and safety of all employees and guests. The Environmental Health and Safety Manager reports directly to the COO and works closely with the CHRO.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Create, implement, and review the organizations health and safety plans;
- Assist in forecasting and developing annual budget for safety programs;
- Interact with public by providing first aid, security and communicating policies and procedures;
- Supervises security guard and EMT teams;
- Conduct routine safety audits, inspections and reviews;
- Routine inspections of public areas and employee work areas and identifies potential safety risks;
- Maintains necessary safety signage and communications to employees and guests;
- Leads zoo safety committee meetings and participates in weekly risk management meetings;
- Risk Management Incident investigations and root causes to ensure corrective action;
- Conduct internal investigations relating to safety issues;
- Works with other zoo employees in various capacities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local safety laws and regulations;
- Coordinates updates to Emergency Response Plan and Safety Manual;
- Conducts various safety drills, hazard communications (SDS), OSHA standards, NFPA;
- Works with Human Resources to conduct orientation training and annual training sessions;
- Takes a lead role in developing and implementing the Emergency Response Program, including developing procedures, providing training;
- Conducts drills, assist with actual responses, and oversee post drill reviews;
- Update the emergency procedures and manuals to comply with AZA (Associations of Zoos and Aquariums) guidelines and best practices;
- Ensures that team members are trained, and manuals properly posted;
- Responsible for all safety documentation and annual reporting;
- Coordinates special event security and safety planning;
- Evaluates and maintains security monitoring systems, fire alarm inspections, extinguisher inspections, annul system and fire prevention system inspections;
- Development of vehicle operating safety program and training;
- Maintains all aspects of AZA accreditation safety requirements and documentation;
- Make recommendations for purchases of safety equipment and security installations;
- Must be willing to support Nashville Zoos Vision, Mission and Values statement;
- Other miscellaneous projects/assignments as assigned by the COO and CHRO.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and experience within a majority of the programs listed: Safety Engineering, Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Safety, OSHA standards, NFPA standards and Fire Prevention, USDA guidelines, ADA guidelines, Emergency Management, Incident Command System (ICS)
- Security licensed and trained
- EMT/First Aid training and experience a plus
- Minimum 5 years in professional capacity related to safety management or similar field with budgeting and supervisory responsibilities
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to conduct both formal and informal training
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent oral and written communications
- Able to work in a team environment
- Working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc.
- Knowledge of AZA Accreditation standards a plus
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Safety, Safety Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- CPR Certification
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Licensed Safety Professional (LSP), National Association of Safety Professionals Certification, (NASP) or Certified Safety Manager (CSM) preferred
- OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification preferred
- Must be able to obtain a TN Security Guard license
- Driving Requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license and good MVR.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
