Job Description

College Aide 1st Yr Grad - Part Time - Up to 21 hours per work week

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Bureau of Communications, housed within the Office of External Affairs, develops culturally responsive public health marketing campaigns; generates and crafts materials to inform New Yorkers of health information and program services, ensuring accessibility for all; provides access to translation services for collateral materials and clinics; maintains the agency's website; and publishes content on the agency's social media platforms. Within Creative Communications, the Digital Communications group oversees the content and strategy for the agency's website and social media pages.

We are seeking to hire a part-time Website Editorial Assistant who will report to the Senior Digital Content Editor..

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

  • Assist with updating content for the general public on the agency's external website.
  • Assist with website maintenance (including fixing broken links, removing outdated information and supporting ongoing accessibility compliance efforts) and website analytics reporting.
  • Post content on the website via our customized content management system.
  • Write, edit and proofread web copy, often updating high-reading level jargon into clear, concise prose.
  • Learn the agency's in-house style guide and plain language principles and apply it to web content.
  • Work closely with a variety of programs within the agency.
  • Build and maintain a good relationship with a network of communications liaisons who represent the agency's divisions and bureaus on web-related issues.
  • Work with the liaisons to keep their online content up to date and accurate.


Preferred Skills

Strong editing and writing skills and familiarity with AP style

Coursework in English, journalism, technical writing or publishing, or public health communications

Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills

Knowledge and experience with a content management system or Google Analytics a plus

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow)

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
