Job Description

**This position has a hybrid opportunity, but requires you to come in office weekly located in Rochester, New York**

General Purpose

The Director of Deaf Professional Interpreter Services (DPIS) is responsible for the language access services provided to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Professionals and Learners throughout the University of Rochester Medical Center, the University of Rochester, and all affiliates.

The DPIS program is vital to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disability Act. The Director provides consultation as requested and service provision to University of Rochester Departments and Schools regarding services for DHH professionals and learners.

The Director of Deaf Professional Interpreter Services reports to the Associate Vice Provost of Disability Compliance.

Essential Functions

Operations Management

  • Responsible for service request process, billing, and staff scheduling for 24/7 operations – ensuring communication access is provided to UR connected DHH professionals and learners

Finance Management

  • Oversees operating budgets and expenses for DPIS department while obtaining adequate resources and supplies for staff to perform their duties

Personnel Management

  • All aspects of staff human resources and performance management: performance concerns, leave administration, performance evaluations, etc.
  • Overseeing recruiting, interviewing and hiring for DPIS positions

Education and Consultation

  • Advises and collaborates with departments to ensure compliance with Joint Commission Standards, Americans with Disability Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act FERPA, and NYS Hospital Code Regulations as it relates to access services
  • Collaborates across disciplines to ensure effective services for employees and learners. Provides education and consultation to UR staff and affiliates regarding a variety of accommodations

Contract and Policy Management

  • Working with outside vendors to develop contractual relationships while managing contract negotiations with access services.
  • Collaborating with other departments and University Purchasing to determine appropriate vendors, implementing department policies and policy training.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in American Sign Language required;
  • Deep understanding of ASL interpretation best practices, approaches to teaming, current trends in the field, and cross-cultural language facilitation required
  • Experience with interpretation in a healthcare or academic setting preferred;
  • 3 years of management or supervisory experience

While this is an hourly position, regular OT is expected – the amount will vary based on need
