Job Description

The Director of Distribution is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the distribution center, ensuring that all logistics, inventory management, and order fulfillment processes run smoothly and meet organizational goals. This role involves leading teams of managers and staff, optimizing workflows, maintaining high safety and quality standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives in the distribution center. The Director of Distribution collaborates closely with Supply Chain, Logistics, Buyers, Merchandisers, procurement, and customer service teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of goods, while managing budgets, analyzing performance metrics, and implementing strategies to enhance productivity and reduce costs. The Director of Distribution will play a critical role in building a positive work culture, driving employee involvement, and supporting change management efforts within the retail organization.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that the warehouse operates at peak efficiency — with safety & customer satisfaction the primary goals — by supervising, organizing, and training warehouse employees and establishing, monitoring, and managing operational goals
  • Develop warehouse operations systems by determining product handling and storage requirements, equipment utilization, inventory, gate processes, and shipping methods
  • Train and manage the warehouse team to solve day-to-day operational issues and reach short- and long-term performance goals
  • Oversee daily operations while controlling and managing inventory and logistics
  • Review and prepare workflows, staffing requirements, space allocations, equipment layouts, and action plans that meet company standards for safety, productivity, quality, and customer service
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing standards and procedures and by complying with legal regulations
  • Supervise daily warehouse activities, including quality assurance, inventory control, space management, logistics, floor productivity, shipping, and customer service
  • Schedule and oversee warehouse team, and manage the flow and quality of work to maximize efficiency and minimize overtime
  • Inspect equipment, tools, and machinery regularly, and oversee general maintenance when necessary
  • Meet regularly with warehouse leads to analyze productivity and develop actionable plans for loss prevention

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Proven experience as a Supply Chain Specialist or in a similar role, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of supply chain processes
  • Strong understanding of procurement, inventory management, logistics, and demand forecasting
  • Proficient in using supply chain management software and tools (e.g., ERP systems, inventory management software, forecasting tools)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make informed decisions
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of international trade regulations, shipping procedures, and customs clearance is a plus
  • Professional certifications such as APICS (e.g., CPIM, CSCP) or CSCMP are advantageous

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree + 10-year work experience or Associate’s + 15 years’ work experience or High School/GED + 20 years’ work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with warehouse procedures and policies. Excellent problem-solving skills and leadership qualities. Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of company staff. Ability to deliver effective feedback, both written and verbal

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee must frequently use their hands to handle or feel objects and must be able to speak and hear clearly.
  • The employee may occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
  • The employee must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
