Job Description

Position Overview:

The Billing Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring efficient revenue cycle management (RCM) within Minnesota Mental Health Clinics (MMHC). This position involves supporting the coordinated delivery of MMHC behavioral health services in outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs, targeted case management, and medication management. This role is crucial in making it as easy as possible for our clients to pay for the services they receive by coordinating with them and their health plans.

In this role, you’ll join a dedicated and passionate team managing a book of ~500 client accounts through benefit verification, bill creation and review, coordination with health plans on authorizations and appeals, and payment collection. You’ll also participate in team projects aimed at advancing and streamlining our capabilities, with the goal of providing the best experience possible to our clients.

The Billing Specialist role requires a minimum of 3–5 years of relevant experience and offers robust opportunities for career advancement within the revenue cycle management team or other administrative areas at MMHC.

Key Responsibilities:

Coordinating with Health Plans on Eligibility, Authorization, and Appeals

  • Advocate for clients by navigating insurance authorization and appeals processes
  • Liaise with health plans to obtain pre-authorizations and verify coverage
  • Prepare and submit appeals for denied claims or authorization requests
  • Stay informed on insurance regulations and reimbursement policies

Reviewing and Creating Bills

  • Conduct reviews of patient encounters and treatment records
  • Generate and submit claims to payers in compliance with industry standards
  • Identify and resolve billing errors or discrepancies
  • Collaborate with clinical and admin teams on billing inquiries

Coordinating Client Accounts

  • Respond to client questions and concerns about billing
  • Communicate updates clearly and transparently
  • Follow up on outstanding client and insurance balances
  • Set up client payment plans according to MMHC policies
  • Process and reconcile payments using billing software

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in medical billing and revenue cycle management
  • Proficiency in industry-standard billing software (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or Netsmart)
  • In-depth knowledge of medical billing codes (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS) and insurance billing regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Experience with payment integrity/analyzing claims or coding optimization
  • Experience in client collections or negotiating alternative payment methods

Pay: Up to $28/hour based on experience & qualifications
