Position Summary:
Our client is seeking an experienced Automation Engineering Manager to join their team, specializing in energy, mining, industrial power markets, and integrated bio-energy solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and exceptional customer focus. This role requires the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development, programming, and implementation of automated systems in the oil and gas industry.
- Design, build, test, and implement automated systems.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and other technical professionals.
- Develop and maintain detailed schedules for automation activities.
- Coordinate project schedules and plans with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
- Provide status updates to internal leadership and client teams.
- Manage resources responsible for configuring and testing software components.
- Develop and maintain automation software standards.
- Gather business requirements, conduct feasibility studies, and prototype solutions.
- Assist in the creation of automation prototypes.
- Oversee all work within the Traditional Energy Systems group, including PLC programming, HMI programming, line control, electrical device layout, startup services, data collection, and process control services.
- Assign work, manage project schedules, and allocate available resources.
- Determine the need for subcontracted labor or additional staff and manage hiring or contracting as needed.
- Provide cost estimates, including person-hour, component, and construction estimates, to the Business Development/Marketing department for project proposals.
- Serve as part of the Senior Management Committee, contributing to corporate policy, personnel decisions, and business development initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to project budgets, timelines, and technical requirements.
- Provide training and development opportunities for team members to enhance skills and maintain compliance with electrical codes and regulations.
- Conduct annual performance reviews for subordinates.
- Ensure all work is conducted safely, in compliance with company policies, and meets established regulatory standards.
- Travel domestically and internationally as required (5–20% per year).
- Uphold company core values to ensure safe and efficient business operations while maintaining strong relationships with employees and clients.
- Serve as a leader and liaison between the organization and customers, addressing contract compliance and resolving issues with professionalism and urgency.
- Lead the hiring, training, and development of new employees, ensuring they meet company performance standards.
- Manage employee issues and policy violations, escalating concerns as necessary and collaborating with Human Resources to implement disciplinary actions.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the primary point of contact for the automation team, troubleshooting and resolving issues promptly to minimize downtime.
- Identify and report all safety concerns in a timely manner.
- Foster a positive working environment aligned with the organization’s objectives.
- Demonstrate effective time management, professional conduct, and adaptability to change.
- Maintain strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other business contacts.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create, modify, and debug PLC, HMI, and data management software code.
- Serve as a technical resource during installation and startup phases.
- Perform functional checkout procedures on assembled projects.
- Assist electrical and systems engineers with design and programming efforts.
- Provide onsite support for functional checkout and troubleshooting as needed.
- Promote a positive workplace culture to support organizational goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field is required.
- Experience: 7–10 years of experience in electrical design, engineering, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of electrical design principles.
- Proficiency in PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems, including Rockwell ControlLogix, Fisher ROC, ABB TotalFlow, and Omni Flow Computers.
- On-site field installation and startup experience with control and automation systems.
- Basic proficiency in AutoCAD (preferred).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows-based software applications.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
